Rooted in Resistance

We have reached the ultimate capitalist state. We create identity by the means of buying brands. Brands create groups and stories for marketing campaigns to sell more and more products. We create identity through brands while brands market themselves through identities. I am also deeply engaged in this system. Therefore I searched for ways to break out of the system. Ways to rebel against identities.

In the process I found two answers:

1. Reflection as an act of rebellion.Even writing this text and thinking about it myself is already an act of rebellion. Being aware of the different ways our identity is shaped is the first step.

2. Looking at the roots of things from a material perspective.Questioning where something comes from beyond the brand. What am I referencing and what am I trying to say with it? But also engaging with where things come from, with roots of product and supply chains.

“Do you cook?” she asked me. “No,” I said.

“Do you garden?” “No.”

“Do you sew?” “No.”

I blushed, unsure how to justify myself and suddenly reconsidering my life choices.

“Well, you see,” Sheila Hicks said, “all that’s gone.”

I decided to work with wool although I am vegan. To justify that in front of myself but also connect back to the roots, the basic textile crafts. I work myself through the entire production chain of wool.
