Contrast, Clash, Contradiction

In this project, I looked into my relationship with fashion and the industry. I reflected on the core contradictions within the system, explored what other contradictions they provoke, and investigated how I am caught up within them. I underlined these contradictions through contrasts of color, materials, and form. But because contradictions are not only the root of the problem but also their solution. I see myself as a designer in duty to make these solutions visible. Going beyond ideas and taking concrete action. Not only questioning the industry but also setting an example. For this particular project, this meant that my final garment is produced circular and biodegradable, with the lowest environmental impact possible.

The objective of this project was to make without the limitations of a brand or the market, experimenting and investigating the relationship between form, material and construction, zeitgeist, society and contemporary culture.

The purpose was set as an experiment to understand the relationship between body and shape.

I clashed with that in the first couple of weeks already. Because is that a purpose? Isn’t that a purpose that is playing in the hands of creating for the sake of creation? Creating for production a core capitalistic concept. That I don’t agree with.

I understand the aim from a strict educational point of view. But I have a background in arts where something you create must say something about yourself, about the world. There is not something such as creating for the sake of creating. But creating for the sake of expression. The aim is a different one. I used this clash, this contradiction as the base for my concept.
